Thanks for the comments guys. I was worried I might offend a lot of people but hoped that the kindness behind the words might come through.

Truly good article, and a lot of sound advice.
The dangers to your health of being overweight are far more scarier than just looking fat.
In the last 18 months I dropped approx 25kgs (about 55lbs) through yoga, changing my diet (weight watchers) and generally being more active.
I'm still at my lowest ever weight. I think it's all about changing for good - a diet isn't short term, exercise isn't short term. It's a way of life. From now to the end.
And don't forget to be kind to yourself.

Excellent, well-written, and balanced post! You do a good job toeing the line between tough love and being insulting, but if someone ignores the wisdom in your post because their feelings got hurt.... well, unfortunately that's their loss.

I am cacomorphobic
That is to say the least
I have a mortal fear of the morbidly obese
If there was a drug for it
I'd be on it now
I am cacomorphobic

Very true. If you want calorie dense food that is unsatisfying, eat something quick and processed. The closer to natural, the less likely you'll become fat.

I also think people lie to themselves. They convince themselves that they're not 'sedentary' because they run around after two kids all day -- this isn't exercise. This is part of your normal metabolic rate and you're already over-compensating for it, so stop.

I also feel that losing weight is around 80% about what's going in to our stomachs and only 20% about the exercise factor. Obese and overweight people need to lower their calorie intake. They can worry about exercising when they get their Body Mass Index (BMI) down to 27. You don't need any exercise to hit 27, it can all be done very easily with wise food choices.

Thank you for not being ANOTHER one of those people that preaches how being fat is ok or good. Being confident is great, being obese is not.
